What are Complex Adaptive Systems?
Complex adaptive systems are systems made up of many interacting parts that learn, adapt, and produce patterns that cannot be fully predicted from the behavior of any single part. Examples include organizations, markets, communities, ecosystems, and teams working in uncertain environments.
In a complex adaptive system, outcomes emerge from relationships, feedback, constraints, and local decisions. Small changes can have large effects, and large interventions may produce little movement if they do not affect the right relationships or conditions.
Understanding organizations as complex adaptive systems changes how leaders approach change. Instead of assuming every outcome can be planned in detail, they create conditions for learning, run small experiments, sense what is changing, and adapt as new patterns emerge.
For a facilitated way to work with complexity, see Making Better Decisions with Cynefin or the Strategic Agility Lab on the nuAgility training page.
