What is AI Readiness?

AI readiness is an organization's ability to use artificial intelligence responsibly and effectively. It reflects whether the organization has the data, workflows, skills, leadership alignment, and governance needed to turn AI opportunities into useful outcomes.

Readiness is more than technical capability. A team may have access to powerful tools but still struggle if its work is poorly understood, its data is unreliable, its risks are unclear, or its people do not know how to evaluate AI-generated outputs. AI readiness looks at the whole system around the technology.

A readiness assessment helps leaders identify where to start, which experiments are likely to teach the most, and what capabilities need to be strengthened before scaling AI across the organization.

Readiness helps leaders choose a useful starting point and identify what must improve before an experiment grows.

Example

Consider a team planning to use AI to summarize customer cases before a handoff. Its readiness review finds that records contain sensitive information, supervisors disagree about what a useful summary includes, and nobody owns correction of misleading output. Before expanding access, the team defines permitted data, agrees on review criteria, and assigns someone authority to pause the pilot. It then tests summaries on a small set of approved cases. The exercise reveals omitted commitments that a technical demonstration missed. Readiness becomes a practical assessment of this workflow, with specific gaps to address before wider use.

Common misunderstanding

An organization can be ready for one AI use case and poorly prepared for another. Reliable tools and clean data do not establish readiness if people cannot evaluate the output, important exceptions lack an owner, or decisions carry consequences the team has not considered.

Assess a specific workflow and its risks. Who checks the result, what evidence makes it trustworthy enough, and what happens when it is wrong? A small, bounded experiment can expose gaps that a broad readiness score conceals.
